Wythenshawe Vets Over-35s are based in south Manchester and compete in the Cheshire-based Vets League Top Tier.

Ireland started turning out for the team during preseason this season through close mate and present team teammate Blake Norton, and the former Republic of Ireland midfielder then asked additional former professionals, who all play in a weekly nine-a-side match, to participate.

So great is the bench strength at Wythenshawe, he had his first game at full-back.

"It's a bit different but then, I enjoy running and just move forward - I'm not staying back that much," he added.

"I warn my defender 'I'm not hanging back' and that I'm just going to keep running.

"The movement is what I'm seeking. It's good fun."

Dreamlike' Experience

Along with Cisse's six goals on debut, Stephen Ireland has netted eight in three appearances for the side, while George Boyd hit 5 on his debut match and Joleon Lescott, a defender by position, notched a hat-trick in one game as a striker.

The team are leading of the Premier Division with 3 victories from three and a goal difference of plus nineteen.

One opponent, 38, who features on the flank for Collegiate OB, came up against former Latics defender Maynor Figueroa on Sunday - and had to explain his young boy who Emile Heskey was.

"The news was going round like wildfire they had these ex-Premier League stars," remarked Barrow.

"I felt I was a little awestruck facing Figueroa to be honest.

"Also Heskey came on and he's got over 60 England appearances.

"Our side competed well for a solid twenty mins but then we had a man sent off and it was hard.

"We literally haven't stopped chatting about it - I was phoning my mother and brother on the way home.

"They were all friendly, shaking our hands after the game - it was like playing a group of regular fellas.

"Now we are eager for the return fixture."
